Powder Coating Systems

In powder coating dry powder paint is applied to the product and fused together during the drying process to produce a durable and decorative coating.  Powder coatings are VOC free.  As with wet paint finishes, the product surface needs to be cleaned and prepared before coating.  And it is essential to ensure that the product is full dried before applying the powder, this is especially important for product that may retain water in hidden areas that will leach out during the powder curing.  Different types of powder are available to suit product use and intended location, but all powder require a drying temperature of around 180°C for the powder cure.

A further advantage of powder coating is utilisation of material, in theory almost all of the powder purchased may be applied onto the goods, with only minimal waste, and this is achieved by re-cycling the powder.  A good booth will have a method of capturing over-sprayed powder, which is often filtered and then mixed with virgin powder for re-use.

Powder is attracted to the product and adheres to the surface through an electrostatic charge, it is essential to protect the coating from draughts and knocks until the produce has been heated and powder has set.  It is also essential to guard against contamination between colours in a multi-colour system.

For a user with only a single colour requirement powder recovery is a very simple operation.  Where multiple colours are necessary then an evaluation is required to determine the colour mix.  There are numerous possibilities to address colour issues; it may be that one or more booths are dedicated to specific colours, with “special” colours used in a spray-to-waste booth.  Alternately there are booths specifically designed for colour-changes.

Typically then; powder booth may be designed to recover powder and maximise powder utilisation, however it may prove more cost effective to ignore recovery and simply dispose of all over-sprayed powder
